Online bartending schools?

Question: Online bartending schools?

(Posted by: joannelb88 on 2008-11-18 14:13:38)

I want to take an online bartending school, just to get an idea of what it is like. I have found some that are like $50- $60 but I dont know if they are legit. Please respond if you have taken any bartending classes onlline and let me know if the place you went to was worth it

That's probably just a certification for states/ cities that require such a piece of paper in order to serve. A real bartending school is going to teach you things you can't get in an online course: customer service, flair, pour techniques, etc. re: the bartender below me ... depends on the bar. Your average bar could care less about coming out of a bartending school. But some place top of the line in a big city where the clientele want more than just someone to pour drinks will want someone with experience and the knowledge of how to be a bartender, not just a pourer.

Any bartending school is a waste of time and money. If you ever want to get an actual job bartending you'll never get hired anywhere worthwhile. They're a joke and bars want people with actual experience. If you're just starting out, apply at a restaurant or somewhere that is looking for a bar back. Real experience is the best. I bartend at 2 different places and we always laugh at people who apply and have a certificate from a bartending school.

I would take it , 50 dollars is cheap even if you only learned a couple cool drinks to make for yourself and friends... to the previous poster - laughing at people that went to school to learn something makes me think you and your little cliques at work are a bunch of low lifes with no education trying to feel better about yourselves. i could always be wrong.

Probably a waste of time. I was sent to a bar tending school after I was already a bartender for almost 2 years. The owner of the new restaurant wanted all of us to 'be on the same page'. This included various family members who never poured a drink and he thought this 'school' would bring us all to the same level. Imagine 2 weeks of evenings pouring colored water into blenders and trying to pretend they were 'real'. The teacher was very little help when it came to customer service or how to deal with being 'slammed' in a busy shift. Get a job in a restaurant cocktailing and ask to 'step in' and help when the bartender looks like they need it.

Waste of money. school doesnt teach you how to deal with customers or how to deal with busy shifts, those things come with experience. any legit bar will laugh at you if you come into a high volume club and tell them you went to bartending school
